The story which takes the viewers the first two episodes to figure out is Duke Freed's escape from his planet Freed. Duke Freed is the prince of Freed which is part of the Vegan star civilization. |

| Planet Freed was a scientifically advanced and peaceful planet. One day, Vega's forces mercilessly attacked planet Freed for no reason. They killed the people, and destroyed the beauty of the planet. |

| Both of Duke Freed's parents died a suffering death in front of his own eyes during the attack. Vega then got his hands on the technology of planet Freed and used it to create the ultimate battle robot-Grendizer. Vega's plan was to use it to dominate the universe. |

| But Duke Freed made an oath that he would not let Vega use the Grendizer. By him swearing this oath, he wanted to avenge what had happened to his planet and parents, and to stop the evil plan in order to save humanity. Duke Freed then fought his way through the Vegan soldiers and repossessed the super robot. Then Duke fought his way out of the burning planet and escaped. |

| Duke Freed launched aimlessly into outer space, then he saw a beautiful shining planet, which was Earth. By coincidence, Dr. Umon had discovered the Grendizer which had crash-landed on Mount Fuji, and found Duke Freed in a terrible state. Duke Freed's identity was kept secret and Dr. Umon adopted him as his own son-Daisuke Umon. |
